4 Signs You Might Need Air Duct Replacement

nsplash

Too often, homeowners in San Antonio run into air conditioning system problems and think it warrants AC repairs. In reality, what you might actually need is duct replacement services. For your AC system to work efficiently, its ductwork needs to be in good shape, but if your air ducts are damaged, old, or leaking, the air created by your AC system won’t ever make it through your vents. Keep reading through this article to learn more about the signs of air ducts that are in disrepair and how to fix them.

1. High Energy Bills

One of the most glaring signs that your home might need duct replacement is a rise in your energy bills. It’s not uncommon for some air to escape your ductwork while it’s traveling to your vents, but if more than a certain amount makes it out, your energy bills will surely skyrocket. How does that work? When you adjust your thermostat, it works to send air through the ducts to cool your home. But if your ducts are damaged or leaking enough to let more than 20% of air escape, your AC system has to work even harder to heat or cool down your home, resulting in higher energy costs. Getting duct replacements will ensure that all of the air needed to cool or heat your home makes it to where it needs to go without your system working in overdrive.

2. Smelling Mold, Mildew, Or Other Musty Odors In Your Home

We’re all familiar with mold and mildew and how it forms in and around our homes. In the case of our AC systems, mold and mildew form when there are uneven temperatures inside and outside ductwork. For instance, when warm air travels through cold ductwork, condensation will form, and where there is moisture in a dark place, mold and mildew are not far behind. If you can smell a moldy, musty scent when your air conditioning system is running, it’s likely that these substances have started to grow and take over your ducts. Not only do mold and mildew make your home smell, but they can also cause health issues to those with sensitive respiratory systems. If you think you’ve got mold or mildew in your ductwork, replacement is your best fix.

3. Noisy Operation

There are few AC systems that are completely noiseless, but if you think the sounds your system is making while in operation are annoying or too loud, you might have an issue. Rattling or vibrating sounds while your air conditioning is running are signs that your ductwork might be loose or its joints are damaged. There’s also a possibility that there are holes in the ductwork that air is escaping through, making loud whistling sounds. Don’t ignore these sounds! Hiring a professional AC contractor to take a look is a good idea. They will be able to assess your system and see if duct replacement is needed.

4. Pest Infestations

When your ductwork has holes or cracks, it does a lot more than let air out– it could be letting pests in. Things like insects and rodents find ductwork to be the perfect place to settle and start breeding, sometimes establishing large colonies and taking over the system. Some signs of pest infestation are nasty smells, weird noises in your ceilings/walls at night, or the spread of sickness and bacteria. Pests can also cause blockages in the ducts, keeping air from flowing the way it should. If you see, hear, or smell signs of pest infestation in your air conditioning ductwork, it’s best to call a group of pros to take care of it and replace your ducts.
