New 2023 Governmental Regulations on HVAC Efficiency in Texas

post img

Since 1992, government regulations have changed for HVAC systems, and efficiency ratings have been updated every six years to help consumers save money and apply more energy-efficient systems. In 2023, there will be a new SEER2 rating standard for heaters and air conditioners.

We’ll discuss the new SEER2 ratings of HVAC systems and how these new regulations will affect homeowners in Texas.

What Is a SEER Rating?

Every air conditioner system has a SEER rating. SEER stands for the “seasonal energy efficiency ratio”; the number helps define an HVAC unit’s energy efficiency and environmental impact.

In 2015, the Department of Energy declared that air conditioners in the South must have a SEER rating of at least 14.

However, there will be new standards starting in 2023. The standard SEER ratings for air conditioners in the South will rise from 14 SEER to 15 SEER2 for split units using less than 45K BTU. For more powerful units that use 45+K BTU, the SEER rating will rise to 14.5.

How Does This Rating Change Affect Your Home in Texas?

Because Texas is in the southern region of the efficiency changes, the new rating for HVAC systems and heat pumps will be 15 SEER2.

Regarding heating and cooling units in Texas homes, residents won’t be required to install new systems immediately. HVAC manufacturers will have to build and sell more efficient air conditioners than they did in the past.

These units will be more energy-efficient and use less power to provide cooling throughout any property where they are installed.

Benefits of Installing a High-Efficiency HVAC System

One disadvantage of upgrading any HVAC system is the cost. More efficient, higher-rated models are newer, and the technology costs more than older models.

Those looking to upgrade their air conditioners may spend more money than expected; installing or replacing your HVAC system with a newer one will save you time and money in the long run.

Some of the long-term benefits of replacing or installing a newer unit when you need a new AC or heating system include the following:

  • Improved air quality in your home
  • Lower energy bills
  • Added home resale value
  • Smoother and quieter system operation
  • Better heating and cooling throughout the home
